Coming back to school after summer break can make children, and parents, feel anxious and worried about what to expect from the new daily routine. Longer days, new people and not being home with mom or dad, may turn an independent child into a clingy, crying one. Commonly referred to as separation anxiety, here are some tips from UCS Director of Elementary Programs, Lisa Rivard:

Set-up a “good bye routine”. Let the child know the time and place where you’ll drop them off and pick them up at the end of the day. Give them reassurance that you’ll be there.

Don’t deviate from the routine. Once you set your parameters, stick to them. “No honey, I can’t walk you to your class, but I’ll see you at the flagpole once school gets out.”

While their feelings are justified, making a child feel comfortable with consistency can go a long way to making positive, secure behavior reemerge.

What have been your experiences with separation anxiety? Are you currently dealing with the symptoms? Let us know what you think. Please share your experiences with other parents by posting a comment and keeping the discussion going.
